The development of the male reproductive tract is dependent upon androgens and mesenchymal-epithelial interactions. Androgens masculinise the reproductive tract during the latter third of gestation, and are required for the formation of the male sex accessory organs including the prostate and seminal vesicle (Cunha et al., 1987). Studies using tissue recombination have shown that androgen receptor action in mesenchymal cells is essential for prostatic induction, and that mesenchymal androgen receptors are both necessary and sufficient for prostatic ductal development (Cunha and Chung, 1981). This has led to the hypothesis that paracrine factors, which are produced by the mesenchyme and regulated by androgens, control the development of the male reproductive tract. Genes that are known to be regulated by androgens are generally secretory proteins or other molecules involved in the differentiated function of prostate epithelial cells. The identity of androgen-regulated mesenchymal paracrine acting factors involved in the development of the male reproductive organs is unknown. While several growth factors are known to be expressed in the prostate only two are thought to function as mesenchymal paracrine acting factors; these are Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF, FGF7) and Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF; Story, 1995). KGF and HGF are not restricted to the prostate (or hormone target organs) and are unlikely to act as mediators of androgen action, although both play important roles in growth regulation throughout organs of the body. It remains to be seen if prostate-specific growth factors exist; it is possible that some growth factors may show partial 3693 Development 126, 3693-3701 (1999) Printed in Great Britain © The Company of Biologists Limited 1999 DEV4159

I-23: Reproduction and Toll Like Receptors(TLRs
Female and male reproductive tracts are of interest sites to study of immune system because they encounter specific infections such as those are sexually transmitted. Furthermore, female reproductive tract is in close contact with allogenic sperms and transmitted microorganisms during intercourse and semi allogenic fetus during pregnancy. In mammals, there are two types of immune responses, the...

Background: In the past decade, childlessness has become a most important problem in the world. At the same time evidence confirms a link between sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and infertility problem. Some of viral STDs are: HIV, HPV, HSVand so on. The innate immune system is essential for the initial detection of invading viruses and subsequent activation of adaptive immunity. also, The...
متن کاملAssessement of Reproductive Toxicity Induced by Deltamethrin In Male Albino Rats
Introduction: Pyrethroids are important insecticides because of their high activity and low mammalian toxicity. Some studies have demonstrated that these insecticides, especially compounds with an -cyano group, produce toxic effects on various biological systems. Deltamethrin (DTM) is a Type II synthetic pyrethroid insecticide containing -cyano group and is used worldwide in agriculture, ho...
متن کاملP-17: Expression of Cell Surface Toll-Like Receptors in the Human Male Reproductive Tract
Background: Male infertility refers to the inability of a male to achieve a pregnancy in a fertile female. The root of many causes of infertility is miscommunication between immune and reproductive system. Male reproductive system is very sensitive and vulnerable, infections can hinder maturation and movement of spermatozoa lead to impaired fertility. All species need an immediate reply to the m...
متن کاملMethods for perfusing the male reproductive tract: models for studying drug and hormone metabolism
Methods for perfusing rat testis and accessory sex organs in situ by recirculating artificial medium to the hemicorpus preparation are described. The advantages and limitations of this system for studying the male reproductive tract were examined. The preparation was then used to study the uptake of androgens into the nuclei of caput epididymis, ventral prostate, seminal vesicle and testis. The...
